Handling Pests With Natural Products
The benefit of the natural products is of course a lower toxicity level for you and your family and pets.
The disadvantages of some natural products is they are not as effective on certain pests. Carpenter and fire ants, for example, won’t likely be fully handled with natural products. They may kill a few of them but the colony or nest is not fully eradicated so often they will return.
But if you are looking for “DIY” products to help control certain pests in your home or yard, here is a selected list:
- Boric Acid: Can be very effective against roaches in either a bait form or simply lightly dusted around cracks and crevices.
- Diatomaceous Earth: Great for a variety of pests and is a good choice for dusting under a home on a pier and beam foundation. It can help with roaches, ants, fleas and many other types of pests.
- Sulfur: Can be put around yards to deter chiggers. Be sure to check with a local gardening expert to ensure it doesn’t disrupt your lawn chemical balance.
- Plant Oils: Primarily contact kill only. Provides some residual effect but only as a repellent while it is still present. Outside it will wash away and degrade very quickly.
- Cedar: Can be used as a deterrent/repellent in granule or other form around your yard.
- Mosquito Dunks: A great choice to help reduce mosquitoes on your property. Widely available at home stores and online. The main ingredient is “BTI” (a type of bacterium that is safe for people and pets but harms mosquito larvae). Place the BTI dunks in ponds, bird baths, buckets of water etc. to kill mosquitos before they become blood-sucking adults!

Aztec’s philosophy is to provide the most effective pest control service available, having the least negative impact on people and the environment here in Austin, Texas. We use a combination of the least toxic and most effective pest control products available.
We originally offered pest control using only natural, “organic” pest control products. While we still offer that service, we now combine those products with a low-toxicity, odorless, synthetic pyrethrin (crushed chrysanthemum flower), offering a longer-lasting residual effect.
