Ants In the Kitchen

It’s the time of year when small ants show up in kitchens and bathrooms. What kind of ants are they? Are they dangerous? Do you need to treat them? Let’s take a look.

Tiny Kitchen Ants

Tiny ants in the kitchen are often rover ants or little black ants. Some just call them “sugar ants” as a catch-all term. Regardless of the name, they show up, like many pests, in the spring and early summer. They are so small that they can find an entrance into your home pretty easily. Often they show up on kitchen countertops from a hole in nearby tile. But they are hard to see! So many times, customer don’t realize they have them until there is a steady stream. They are looking for food and water, of course, and can set up a trail leading to just a tiny amount of food.

One thing you can try before calling for treatment is just to clean up any spills, sticky spots etc. that may interest them. Wipe down all the counters. Before you do, look for their entry point. You can caulk any gaps or holes before cleaning and that may be enough!

Do They Sting?

The tiny ants are too small to sting or bite. They’re also not a disease carrier so really, there’s not a major threat except for the nuisance. But if the ants are a bit larger and on the ground, and not on countertops, those could be fire ants. You’ll want to get those professionally treated or at the minimum make sure you focus your DIY efforts outside and look for any mounds that are right up against the house.

Treating Small House Ants

These little ants around your home can sometimes be treated yourself. If you aren’t seeing a ton of them or having streams of them along counters, there are home baits such as “Terro Liquid Ant Bait” which can be effective.

As mentioned, sometimes just cleaning and filling in a few small gaps is enough.

But if that doesn’t work or they are just annoying and persistent and you want them gone, we offer a small ant treatment that includes knocking them back in your kitchen or bathrooms as well as treating outside with spray and bait to handle the source.

We specialize in long-lasting treatments using products in a way that effectively kills bugs but has no impact on people. No contracts are needed. We treat more than once a year about as often as we skip years between treatments.

Aztec’s philosophy is to provide the most effective pest control service available, having the least negative impact on people and the environment here in Austin, Texas. We use a combination of the least toxic and most effective pest control products available.

We originally offered pest control using only natural, “organic” pest control products. While we still offer that service, we now combine those products with a low-toxicity, odorless, synthetic pyrethrin (crushed chrysanthemum flower), offering a longer-lasting residual effect.
