Do Roaches Hate the Heat?

Roaches have a reputation as being “indestructible” because they’ve been around on Earth so long, but that’s not really the case. Like most creatures, they need food, water and don’t do well in extreme temperatures.

Speaking of ridiculous temperatures, we’ve been in the middle of a blistering run of Texas temperatures with multiple weeks of over 100 degrees here in Austin, breaking all kinds of heat records.

And yes, even cockroaches aren’t fans of temperatures this hot.

You want to stay inside most of the day where it’s cool, and so do they. Most roaches like moderate, slightly warm temperatures, around 75 to 85.

Also known as your kitchen. Sorry.

But knowing they need it not too hot can help with some quick prevention tips:

1) Get rid of piles of leaves or debris just outside your home. Those shady, cooler piles can be attractive to roaches and bring them one step closer to inside your walls.

2) Look for gaps in doorways and windows. Weather stripping can suffer during hot weather too, and if it’s already eroded or worn down, it’s a perfect time to fix it. It’ll improve your home’s energy efficiency and that tighter seal will make it at least a little bit harder for bugs to get inside.

3) Watch for indoor water leaks or even bowls of food or water left out for pets. If your water bill went up even more than expected during the dry spell, have your house checked for leaks. Any leaks near tubs, sinks or faucets can be just what a roach needs to come in and stay in.

If you are tired of the heat, sorry we can’t help. But if you’re sick of seeing roaches inside because of the heat, that’s where we come in.

We specialize in long-lasting treatments using products in a way that effectively kills bugs but has no impact on people. No contracts are needed. We treat more than once a year about as often as we skip years between treatments.

Aztec’s philosophy is to provide the most effective pest control service available, having the least negative impact on people and the environment here in Austin, Texas. We use a combination of the least toxic and most effective pest control products available.

We originally offered pest control using only natural, “organic” pest control products. While we still offer that service, we now combine those products with a low-toxicity, odorless, synthetic pyrethrin (crushed chrysanthemum flower), offering a longer-lasting residual effect.
