Ants in the Walls
These are “wood ants” that, fortunately, don’t eat wood like termites, but they can still make nests and galleries in wood beams and become a nuisance. In particular, they often drop the debris they make as they burrow. This may appear around window frames or even through small holes they can make in the wall. It appears as sawdust-like material in small piles.
While you may want to, we recommend you never spray them with Raid or another harsh consumer brand ant killer. First, because it won’t work to kill any that are behind the wall. But also because sprays often disperse the ants due to the fumes and repellant characteristics of the product, so the ants end up in even more locations and become even harder to handle.
The best way to solve it is to search for where they are coming from outside your home. This is the nest that needs to be eradicated. Then you can treat the paths and areas where they have crawled to your home but with sprays that don’t repel them and with baits that they will bring back to the colony.
If the exterior nest can’t be found, or is not on your property, the non-repellant sprays and baits are still effective in handling the ants getting into your home.
