Cleaning as Pest Control
- Moths
These include both grain moths and clothing moths. The cleaning in this case is more “removal” of the items where the moths are breeding. This can be a bag of grains, rice, flour or similar. For clothing moths it can of course be a wool sweater, but they also will munch on any organic fiber so a rug may be to blame or any other clothing item made with natural fibers.Finding and removing those items is key. Then vacuuming the area where you have been seeing moths. Do those more than once and over a series of days. Then clean and wipe down any surfaces, such as shelving, to really ensure all moth eggs are gone. Include the sides and underneath the shelves too!
- Gnats
Like moths they are breeding off of some organic material in your home. They could be fungus gnats in your plants or small fruit flies. Getting rid of that source will handle them along with some sticky traps or other capturing system. The source material could be a build up of gunk in your sinks. You can try enzymatic cleaner to dissolve or break that down, or be very thorough and scrub the inside of the pipes out. - Flies
Like gnats, these are reproducing from a source. It could be anything from a small animal or rotten food left out somewhere or even compost piles. If you have any of these in or near your home you will likely have flies.Stop us if you see the pattern, but removing those sources will handle the infestation much faster. Just spraying or even setting out fly traps will reduce but if that source remains they’ll keep coming back.
So like the others, take a few minutes to investigate and look and you’ll likely find what you need in order to stop the issue. And you’ll save money on unnecessary pest control treatments as well!
