Eliminating Insect Hiding Spots
One of the best ways to keep insects out of your home is to remove their favorite hiding spots outdoors, especially right next to your house.
Here are some of the areas to watch for:
- Tall grass: tall grass or weeds are a favorite for insects. It provides them protection and cover from their enemies and a safe place to build nests or homes. Regularly mowing your yard is a way to discourage them from moving in and living, plus it helps beautify your home and neighborhood! Especially important to use a weed trimmer on the tall grass right next to the foundation.
- Rocks, bricks, wood, etc.: piles of anything near the house will be a favorite spot for bugs, especially if it is undisturbed. So if you had a home improvement project with leftover material or just a rock pile that turned into a permanent fixture, now is the time to take that away. Similarly, piles of food or even firewood near the home should be removed, or moved further from the foundation.
- Tools, equipment, bags, boxes: while pests won’t usually inhabit tools or equipment laying around, having those can lead to additional lawn issues (see tall grass above) where things aren’t kept as trim and neat as they could be. Bags and especially cardboard boxes are an issue outside the home. Insects, particularly roaches, love cardboard and stacked boxes. We’ve also seen people use cardboard as a method to kill a strip of grass for eventual landscaping, but the fire ants didn’t die underneath that cardboard. They thrived with the protective cover and hidden area. Once the cardboard was removed and the fire ants treated, the homeowner’s pest issue was handled.
Take a look around the outside of your home for these and other issues. The simple thing to remember is that if there is darkness, moisture and protection from the elements and predators then that area is a likely trouble spot and breeding ground for pests.

Aztec’s philosophy is to provide the most effective pest control service available, having the least negative impact on people and the environment here in Austin, Texas. We use a combination of the least toxic and most effective pest control products available.
We originally offered pest control using only natural, “organic” pest control products. While we still offer that service, we now combine those products with a low-toxicity, odorless, synthetic pyrethrin (crushed chrysanthemum flower), offering a longer-lasting residual effect.
