And that’s definitely not wrong. But is there a season where you can really make a major impact on them, and help keep them away even longer? There is!

We’re getting to the time of year when fire ants are “desperate,” so to speak. This year in particular it has been extremely hot and incredibly dry for months.

Now that fall is (slowly) approaching, fire ants start to prepare for when they are more dormant over the winter and go deeper underground.

The problem for the ants this year is that it has been so hot and dry that they may lack food and water to do that. So they move more and more (such as towards your house) to search for that food.

Most people equate a hill or mound in the yard with the presence of fire ants, but they can be in the ground whether you see a mound or not. If it’s hot they’re a little deeper in the dirt and aren’t visible until the ground is disturbed — such as when gardening — or when they get up to your home and start foraging inside!

So the solution as always is to treat the yard with bait.

So this time of year, as summer slowly moves to autumn, is a great time to treat fire ants when you have them.

You’ll hit them when they are very eager to find food. And you get them as they are about to go into a more dormant time of year in late fall and winter before becoming active again in spring.

That one-two punch can keep them away for even longer and you may see far fewer or even none at all in the spring and early summer when fire ants become more visible and active.

If you are not seeing any fire activity at all, there’s of course no need to treat. But if you have them in your home, near your home or see them when your yard or garden is stirred up, now is a great time to treat.
