Small Black Ants in the Kitchen

It’s that time of year where you probably notice tiny black ants show up in the kitchen. Or you may not! They are, after all, tiny.

Despite their little size they can be quite annoying. These little specks that show up around your kitchen sink, stove, food containers or pet food are enough to irritate and ruin a morning meal.

What to do?

  • First, wipe off counters with a mild soapy cloth and water.
  • If you have any standing water or leaks or spills, dry those up, especially at night before sleeping.
  • Close up any open containers – cereal, dog food and honey, for example. For honey and syrups, consider sealing them inside a plastic bag or container.
  • There are consumer brand “sugar ant” baits like Terro Liquid Ant Bait which can work reasonably well for a minor issue. You can place these in various spots on the counters or near kitchen backsplashes where the ants often travel. Don’t put bait stations directly on the ant trail. Place them just a half-inch or so away.
  • Look for entry points such as cracks or holes in the grout or tile. Repair those to help reduce entry points.

If the ants persist a week or so after the above steps, a small ant pest treatment may be needed. We do a thorough exterior spray and use baits and spot treatments to handle them.

We specialize in long-lasting treatments using products in a way that effectively kills bugs but has no impact on people. No contracts are needed. We treat more than once a year about as often as we skip years between treatments.

Aztec’s philosophy is to provide the most effective pest control service available, having the least negative impact on people and the environment here in Austin, Texas. We use a combination of the least toxic and most effective pest control products available.

We originally offered pest control using only natural, “organic” pest control products. While we still offer that service, we now combine those products with a low-toxicity, odorless, synthetic pyrethrin (crushed chrysanthemum flower), offering a longer-lasting residual effect.
