Insects become more active when the weather warms up and termites are no exception. These structural menaces cause up to $5 billion in yearly home damage in the U.S. alone.

How to Identify a Termite

Ant Termite comparisonTermites can sometimes be confused with winged ants during swarming season in the spring.

As shown in this Texas A&M Agrilife Extension image, a termite has a uniform waist vs. the pinched waist of an ant. Ant antennae are bent, where termite’s are straight. The wings also have differences with the termite wings being of equal length and ant swarmer wings are unequal.

Do You Have Termites?

Here are a few signs to look for if termites are active around your Austin home:

  • Mud tubes are used by many termites to reach a food source and as protection as they travel. These can be seen on the inside or outside of walls as well as possibly in cracks in the structure or cement.
  • Bubbling paint that may look like water damage.
  • Walls and wood on the home that sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Discarded wings near doors or on windowsills which can indicate swarmers are in the home.

Low Toxicity Termite Treatment

If you have termites there is not a need for a drastic or highly toxic and dangerous treatment.

At Aztec Organic Pest Service our termite professionals use a low-toxicity termite treatment called “Altriset.” There is no pure organic pest control method legally registered for professional termite control, and this is one of if not the safest alternative.

The Environmental Protection Agency does not require a signal word, such as “caution”, “warning” or “danger”, on the label. It is so low in toxicity that technicians are not required to wear specialized safety equipment during the course of application. It targets termites specifically and has practically no impact on beneficial organisms such as earthworms or honey bees.

We provide on-site termite inspections and treatment bids particularly for smaller jobs that do not require a full house treatment. Call us at (512) 443-0123 or use our easy termite quote form for a safe and environmentally friendly termite treatment.
