Looking for Pests In the Spring

When the weather starts to warm up like it is this week around Austin, it is a great time to inspect for pest issues.

But before looking for actual pests, look around your home and outside for potential pest nesting spots.

This could be anything from a stack of cardboard boxes in the garage to piles of rock or stone near the house.

Clearing out brush, debris, piles of leaves any potential hiding spots can help keep pests away entirely. At the minimum, it can reduce their numbers. Most bugs like dark, damp, covered areas. Keeping things dry, open and clear of debris reduces those opportunities to hide.

Then, look for any signs of activities. Ants in particular start getting active and are usually more obvious than some other pests.

You may see small mounds in the yard indicating fire ants. But fire ants can still be present without a mound. Look around garden areas, paver stones and up near the foundation. There may be ants starting to come out of the ground from their dormant period. If so, that’s a great time to treat them as they forage for food.

All types of ants have what are called “swarmer ants.” These are winged ants that help establish new colonies for them. Some people assume termites when they see them, but it could just be ants. There is an article describing ants vs. termites you can review.

Swarming ants may not be a major infestation or cause for alarm. It could be a few random ants that landed on your property.

But if you see any ants crawling inside you should likely get that treated.

Aztec’s philosophy is to provide the most effective pest control service available, having the least negative impact on people and the environment here in Austin, Texas. We use a combination of the least toxic and most effective pest control products available.

We originally offered pest control using only natural, “organic” pest control products. While we still offer that service, we now combine those products with a low-toxicity, odorless, synthetic pyrethrin (crushed chrysanthemum flower), offering a longer-lasting residual effect.
